The B60b's
contributions to American History were to transport Baggage and Express
Packages. A fabrication of the Pennsylvania Railroad, they "served" many
Railroads throughout the Country as part of the Railway Express Agency.
Presence of roof
vents indicated the car was styled in such a manner as to carry a rider, or
"messenger", whose duties were to sort the mail and packages while in
transit. This was a far cry from today's air conditioning and ventilation
systems. Messenger-equipped cars also sported a 6" gold star above the car
number, indicating the car may be occupied. They could be spotted at the
head end on long distance trains when accompanying the train for the entire
trip. However, if their journey was limited to a short distance, they would
be coupled on the back of the train for ease of drop off while the remainder
of the train continued to its destination. |
|
Generally coupled to
the front of a train, the typical duty of a Baggage Car was to carry the
checked baggage for the passengers traveling on the train. These cars were
not occupied by a messenger and were inaccessible to passengers while the
train was in motion. Therefore they did not sport the roof vents nor the
gold star. |
